It is a proven fact that people in general only use about 10% of their brain capacity as they go about their day to day affairs. The other 90% simply goes unused. Now keep in mind that this is an average number because as you already know, some people are of course more intelligent than others. Maybe you have already seen an extremely gifted person perform "brain tricks" on TV. Memorize huge sets of numbers, or do intricate math.
So then the next question, regardless of how much or how little of your brain that you have access to right now, is can you be made smarter? Can your IQ be raised? Rather than answer this question, consider this. Can people be made dumber by things like sensory deprivation, or even perhaps drug, and alcohol abuse? The answer to that is of course "yes" people can.
Then to extrapolate that out even further, if your brain loses function by lack of stimulation, or brain exercise then it's only logical that if you were to "stimulate your brain" it will respond with a higher IQ. So then you have to come up with some plan, like a regular exercise regimen to perform your brain workouts with, and what more people are choosing and finding effective today is chess. So then why chess?
The reason for this particular game is that it teaches both the young and old concepts in how to manage both long and short term strategies simultaneously. It's really quite simple in how it's laid out on the board, and takes very little time to master the fundamentals. This is a game that involves setting long term goals that for the most part are reached by achieving a series of short term goals.
So through repetitive training, it actually bolsters your brains ability to think in a strategic fashion which in turn works to improve your ability to make sound judgmental decisions. This game also requires intense concentration, so it's great exercise for learning how to block out distractions while you're trying to think. You learn to more clearly focus, and also it betters your ability to achieve tunnel vision.
As just as lifting weights will make your arms more powerful, this one game by the way that it "stretches and challenges" your brains normal functions, will also make it stronger. At the same time it's a great tool for meeting and interacting with new people. Just ask around, or take a look online, and you will see that there is at least one chess club where you live, and they're always looking for new members.
