There's just no getting around it and that is for anyone who operates a vehicle on the roads and highways in the US, collision insurance is mandatory. Of course it's always been the wise thing to do but since the new law was enacted, if you are stopped by the police or in an accident without proper coverage, you will lose your license for up to a year's time.
Now in the event that you are involved in a traffic collision while driving uninsured, not only is the penalty severe but you will be left to fight any civil challenges, and clear your name entirely on your own. However, if you're ensured as the law mandates, your situation will be entirely different. In this case, it will be your insurance carrier who has to foot the bill for attorneys, and private investigators.
The fact is though, that it's very easy to go without paying your insurance premiums, and this is for several common reasons. Perhaps you've encountered recent financial problems, and need to cut something from your budget. Or maybe you have never even been in an accident and it's been years since you received a traffic violation. Either way, driving while uninsured is just like playing Russian roulette.
So then just what are the primary factors that a company that you get your quote from is going to take into account and can you affect at least some of them to lower your quote? The fact is that yes you can, and it all begins with the type and value of the car you drive. Go to insure an expensive car or any vehicles on their (high risk) list and you are going to have to pay a higher rate.
Surprisingly your age will factor in heavily if you're a young driver and most particularly if you are a teenager. If this sounds unfair then you need to consider that young people are simply involved in more accidents than older people. Other factors that will come into consideration are the area you live in, and for sure any prior DUI convictions.
Now if you have all of the above high risk factors and even others that weren't listed, you still can bring down the rates you pay by doing things like choosing minimal coverage and going without theft coverage, etc. Still most insurance carries do offer discounts for things like taking a driving course, or if you drive your vehicle under a certain mileage limit, or you can opt for a high deductible.
