What you'll find if you attempt to discuss the topic of market research with most people who are just starting in with Internet marketing, is that they tend to take a rather thin, one sided view of it. To them it's primarily seen as a means for determining how well, or how bad a product, or service will do in the market place. Talk to a seasoned entrepreneur however, and he or she will give you an entirely different opinion because they use it for so much more.

Then again it's commonly used to mine data regarding target, or niche markets, the levels of competition in those market sectors, and any movement in buying trends. Also business operators can through this type of research, get an idea of how their customers "think" as it pertains to what it is that they're selling. How they plan on, or are using it, and what they can do to best facilitate those needs.

Now if you're a newbie to Internet marketing, the first place you're going to run to is a keyword search site, and that's understandable because they do have their uses. Your problem though may be that you'll tend to rely on them for more information that they really are able to offer you, such as accurate competition levels. Now take the keywords "alternative energy as a fine example of this.

Enter something like perhaps "solar panel", or even better yet, "wind turbine generators" into the keyword search bar and give it a click. Now what you will find is some reasonable search numbers but nothing incredible. In fact you'll find more promising numbers with conventional gas, or diesel powered generators. So to bean counters who use this type of site to gauge competition levels alternative energy could appear to be a "low competition" market.

The truth is that competition right now is "brutal" for alternative energy sites and blogs because anyone with any foresight knows that that market sector is only going to grow in the coming months, and years. Energy companies, product developers, and even speculators looking to work a site into a dominant position in the search engines for future site sales are all there working away for the future.

So the bottom line is that market research is a far more complex topic than most people realize. Once you get into it, particularly in light of expanding global markets, it can seem that the more doors you open to gain a better perspective, the more doors you are confronted with. So perhaps you now have some idea of why more online marketers are turning to computer software tools and services for market research.
