The truth of the matter is that regardless of which direction the global economy goes, oil and gas companies will continue to drill. So yes these types of offshore platform jobs are unaffected by economic changes. Now another thing worth nothing is that they pay extremely well, and many of them require no advanced education.

In fact if you're a crane operator, diesel mechanic, cook, hydraulics mechanic, or machinist then you in fact have the actual job skills right now, and there are others as well. Also if you're now working at a regular 9 to 5 then you may be interested in knowing that when you work on an offshore platform, you get paid for the 24 hours a day you're out there. Seven days a week.

Don't worry if you're fresh out of high school and have no formal education or training either because many companies will in fact train you on the job. You earn as you learn. Now of course you will have start out on the bottom of the totem pole but the knowledge and skills you'll pick will last a lifetime, and keep you working year round.

Understand this though. That is that you will have to pass an initial drug test and also periodic spot checks as well. Now if you even so much as smoke pot you'll be fired on the spot and then you also run the risk of being blacklisted by other businesses that contract labor for the drilling companies. What this all means is that you need to make "damn sure" you can stay clean.

You also need to understand that once you get out on an offshore drilling platform, you'll be pretty much isolated from the world for the time you are out there. Now the least amount of time you will stay is three weeks but if you can handle it, you can stay out there months if you want to. You see, the longer you're willing to stay the more they're willing to pay.

In the end, the bottom line is this is high paying "real mans" work. The risks are high and the stakes are high, so it's by no means a normal job. If you can cut it though and lots of folks in fact love this line of work, these are jobs that can actually make a real difference in the lifestyle that you and your family live. Year round employment that goes on no matter what.
